Route of All Evil
Correlate means to have a mutual relationship or connection, in which one thing affects or depends on another.
There are many correlations within David Berkowitz’s case. When David was a young man he commenced committing arson crimes by setting numerous buildings on fire. These property crimes are usually committed by youths (13- 20 years old), which fall under Age and crime. This eventually led to his mass destruction, killing innocent people. The correlation here is that arson led to the murder of innocent citizens.
Most of David’s victims were females. David was saddened of the death of his stepmother in 1967. His father than remarried a woman he highly disliked. Subsequently, in 1971 David joined the army. Throughout his three years of service with the army, he had one sexual encounter with a prostitute. This sexual encounter with the prostitute passed him a venereal disease. He was led to believe that his birth mother died while giving birth to him, which caused intense guilt and anger inside of him. After these encounters with the women in his life he began to have a negative perspective towards them. This could be one of the major reason why his victims were generally women. His negativity towards women led to the murders of his innocent victims.
David’s childhood was somewhat troubled. He had an above-average intelligence but lost interest in learning at an early age. David was larger than most kids his age and not particularly attractive. He earned a reputation as a bully in his neighborhood. He also felt rejected and scorned because he was adopted. Also, his parents weren’t sociable people, which then led to David’s reputation as a loner. Some alleged that because he believed he was the cause of his biological mothers death it was the reason for his anti-social and aggressive behavior as a child.
Berkowitz believed that demons talked to him. Howling dogs in the neighborhood kept Berkowitz from sleeping and in his deranged mind, he turned their howls into messages from demons that were ordering him to go kill women. He later said that in attempt to quiet the demons, he began to do what they asked. After his first victim, these so called demons wanted more blood, more shooting, more death. Soon the demands were so strong that Berkowitz, who tried to fight them, could no longer refuse. A monster was born.
