David Berkowitz was neither a mass murderer nor a spree murderer…he was a SERIAL KILLER!
A mass murderer kills four or more people at one location during one continuous period of time, whether it is a few minutes or over a period of days.
Example: Richard Speck killed eight nurses in their town-home one night in 1966 in Chicago. He was a mass murderer.
A spree killer kills two or more victims in more than one location. The spree is considered a single event because there is no "cooling off" between the murders.
Example: Robert Polin killed one student and wounded several others in 1975 after stabbing to death one of their friends earlier.
A serial killer murders three or more victims, but each one is a separate occasion with a cooling off period in between.
Example: Son of Sam, Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, Jeffrey Dahmer and Charles Manson were/are all serial killers.
